Edi Matsumoto was born and raised in Japan. Her maternal great-grandfather was a traditional Japanese artist, and she grew up in an environment where art was valued.
Matsumoto holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. After traveling around Southeast Asia, exploring cultures, and volunteering at Mother Theresa’s Home for the Dying Destitute in Calcutta, India, she came to the U.S. She earned a master’s degree in nursing, and she worked in the healthcare field for almost 30 years. In 2018, she earned her second master’s degree in fine arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Matsumoto’s work has won numerous awards and has been shown at galleries and museums locally, nationally, and internationally, including Art Renewal Center, the International Guild of Realism, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the Triton Museum of Arts in Santa Clara, and Pacific Grove Art Center, and in prestigious art magazines including Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, and Leonardo Guía de Art y Artistas.
Since retiring from hospital work in 2021, she became a full-time artist and launched her wearable art in 2022. She opened a studio/ gallery/ boutique on Mission St. Carmel in the spring of 2024.

Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel is the only city in the US without a physical location. The hours will be Wed, Thu, Fri 12-4 pm, St & Sun 10-4 pm, and by appointment. We won’t open until early April.
